It was with much intrepidation and mock bravado that I stepped out onto the streets of West Bridgford on Saturday morning to help promote a fantastic shop that’s right on our doorsteps.
Locally Produced for You is the wonderful creation of Kate Kumar. Originally starting life as a website and directory of local makers and artists/designers, Kate has realised her dream and now has an actual bricks and mortor shop!
And it is wonderous! You can find everything from beautiful silver jewellery (I have my eye on some earrings Mr Tyce-bert) through to delish home made chutneys and jams. There are unique and lovely greetings cards and gifts for all occasions. Kate can also arrange for personalised items to me made just for you by the makers.
The new space is lovely and roomy enough to hold workshops – up and coming are glass and sewing workshops (follow the above link for details).
So how do you find this little gem? well, as you know the big boys have all the ground floor rental space sewn up for big-name coffee shops and eateries. So Kate’s place is on the first floor… It’s easy – head to the Health Food Store (opposite Iceland in west Bridgford), walk to the back of the shop and you’ll find some stairs – head up to the top and you’re there!
There are lots of lovely gift shops in West Bridgford but I guess Kate’s place offers something different. It’s all hand-made, it’s all local stuff. It hasn’t been mass produced – as such it’s ethical. Every piece has a story. And what I have the most respect for Kate for is the fact that she is supporting so many makers in their small businesses, some on the very first rung of their ladder.
Brilliant work Kate – lets support this brilliant venture as much as we can!
